If you haven’t already noticed, the South boys tennis team has been putting on a show this season.
After a lowly five win season last year, the Panthers have accumulated a 12-4 record with wins over Providence, Jeffersonville and Bloomington North. The win over Bloomington North during the regular season was the first rivalry win for South in four years. The dynamic duo of Daniel and Marcell Borhi has headlined the Panthers as they began their postseason run last Wednesday.
South swept back to back matches against Martinsville and Edgewood on Wednesday, putting them in the Sectional final against North. Similar to the regular season matchup, the Cougars couldn’t handle what South brought to the net on Thursday night. With a 4-1 win, South was finally able to hold up the sectional title, snapping North’s four-year win streak. Seniors Holt Henke, Calvin Prenkert, Gus Richter and Dexter Wu-Corts had the honor of hoisting the Sectional trophy for the first time in their South tennis career.
“It felt especially good after watching North raise the trophy these past years,” Henke said.
After losing in Sectionals by North’s volition in three of the last four years, the Panther seniors were able to finally get revenge.
“The sectional title win was a long time coming,” Henke said.
The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday at Bloomington North against Greensburg in the first round of Regionals. The Pirates come into this game with a record of 13-1 and look to be the favorites. However, after crushing the Cougars, the Panthers seem ready for anything and bring major confidence into their first Regional’s appearance in four years.
