Girls soccer, also known as South Footy, made it all the way to the regional finals last season where they tragically lost to Center Grove by way of penalty kicks. They lost senior captains in Hope Gummere and Riley Lukens, but should have plenty of new senior leadership to have a successful season.
The Panthers will get most of their offense from senior winger Emi McClaine, sophomore forward Melea Miller, and junior winger Aviv Hager. Look for senior Kristen Ridner and junior Katie Majercak to also score a few goals this year. Miller is coming off a freshman season where she put in an impressive seven goals, so she will look to score even more this season. Freshmen attacker Nora Doyle will get some varsity minutes this year, which is a good sign for the future of the program.
The midfield for the Panthers will have a new look this year due to Riley Lukens graduating. Senior Maggie Doyle and sophomore Maya Hall will lock down opposing forwards, so Majercak can have room to distribute the ball, and start the offense.
The defense lost some key leadership when Gummere graduated, but senior defenders Clara Vouskil, Nicole Hardy, and Kira Kunzman should dominate opposing attackers this season. Vouskil will be the rock at the center back position, while Kunzman and Hardy play left and right back respectively. Kunzman said, “we have all been playing together since we were kids, so and we work really well together so we should be pretty good this year.” Junior goalkeeper Kristen Morgan made some pretty important saves last season, and she will be looking to build off of her success.
South kicks off their first game against Martinsville on Monday, August 19th at 7 p.m.
