The Perseid Meteor Shower is a highlight for many stargazers. The Perseids are meteor showers produced by a stream of debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet. This year, the annual shower will peak from August 11 – 13. To experience the shower to the fullest, here is some tips and tricks:
- Where should I view the meteor shower?
You want to find a place with little light pollution and is somewhat clear from structures that impact how much of the sky you can see. To make certain of seeing the shower, look to the northeastern part of the sky. A common place to view the meteor shower in south-central Indiana is Brown County State Park. The entrance fee for in-state vehicles is $7.
- When should I be viewing the meteor shower?
Typically your best shot to see them in the peak viewing days would be from midnight to dawn. Occasionally, they can be seen as early as 10 p.m. Although, depending on how many clouds there are and how bright the moon is, it can impact how well you can view the shower.
- What should I bring with me?
Bring a lawn chair, a water bottle, possibly a jacket if it is cold, and bug spray. Viewers must be patient to watch the shower, so be prepared with all the things you may need!
