South history teacher Kendra Parker will depart Bloomington for Los Alamos, New Mexico after the conclusion of the 2023/24 academic year. Parker’s classes included AP US History and AP government – two popular courses among upperclassmen.
When asked about her reasoning for her move, Parker said her “husband got a job with the national park service,” which provides a unique opportunity for both of them to be involved with a “meaningful and interesting” program. Additionally, Parker said that she plans to teach in New Mexico. “I am really hoping to continue teaching in the Los Alamos Public Schools, which is the best public school district in the state,” Parker said, “maybe it will be high school, maybe it will be middle school, maybe it will be English or social studies – I’ve taught both of those things, and will have to wait and see which opportunities are open for me.”
Moreover, Parker said that South “has been by far [her] favorite school to work at,” and that she greatly appreciates her students. “The students are my favorite,” Parker stated, “they want to connect so well with their teachers, and it makes our jobs so much more interesting.”
Many of Parker’s students appreciated her dedication and passion for teaching. Junior Lewis Robinson stated that Parker’s teaching methods, coupled with her personality, allowed him to succeed within her history class. “She is able to engage [with] the class, while also presenting information herself,” Robinson said, “she tells us what we need to know but also integrates us into discussions.”
As the conclusion of the academic year rapidly approaches, Parker’s students will enjoy her final month at South.
