Attention all blondes and those who love the law: Bloomington South is producing the Broadway adaptation of Legally Blonde.
Co-director Britney Kouma, who is a Government and AP European History teacher at South, thinks this production will be something that high school students can relate to. “[The show] tackles a lot of different ideas and values that we definitely see within our high school community.” Specifically, Kouma thinks that finding yourself is something that a lot of students struggle with. Kouma believes that this production of Legally Blonde is “a show that is going to inspire people to be [themselves]”
Making a well-known production like this doesn’t come without its challenges. Kouma said that the budget was her number one challenge in the production process. “We have a lot of money that needs to be raised, so we need to do a lot of volunteering and a lot of donations if possible.” Another challenge Kouma is facing is the cast. “Finding the right people to work with is so important. The right group will support whoever we cast.”
In producing and directing this project, many students and faculty have wondered whether Kouma will become the director of Theater South, since Catharine Rademacher will be retiring from Theater South this year. “I am willing to. I know that they have previously always hired an English teacher to do [Theater South]. I also know that she has theater classes and I don’t think I would take over those,” Kouma said. “ I do think it might be a collaborative effort with whatever teacher is hired next.”
When production begins, rehearsals will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-6 PM and on Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. The performance dates are on April 3 at 7 p.m., April 4 at 7 p.m., and April 5 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
If you are interested in auditioning for the production of Legally Blonde, the dates to audition are on November 18th and 19th from 3-6 p.m. in room A101.
