Freezefest is an annual event that takes place downtown Bloomington at the Mill. People gather to enjoy food and games while appreciating the ice sculptures different artists have made. This festival was held this past weekend from January 23rd to the 25th.
According to the Bloomington website dedicated to Freezefest, ice carvings began on the 23rd with a chili cook off and Chocolate Moose. South English teacher James Kerr won the chili contest out of twenty-four contestants.
Kerr said that the chili recipe he used he had been making for six years. The chili he chose to make was called Salsa Macha, a dish “inspired by a Mexican dried chili salsa called Salsa Macha.” When asked why he thought his chili stood out, he said that he used actual dry chilis instead of dried chili powder (which is what the majority of people use when making Salsa Macha). Also, senior Noah Lasher assisted him, and Kerr said that Lasher helped the chili win first place.
Additionally, on the 24th, there were ice carving demonstrations, food trucks, a coloring contest, a fire show, and a B-Town ice battle. On the 25th, there was hot chocolate, photo opportunities, food trucks, coloring contest and ice sculpture showings, and cookie decorating.
The artists demonstrate how they make their sculptures, and people who show up to the event get to vote who they think wins the ice carving competition. The variety of activities offered outside of the ice carvings give guests many ways to be involved.
The Freezefest is a great way for Bloomington South students to enjoy the cold weather and explore what our city has to offer.
