Bloomington High School South’s Girls Basketball team has done extraordinarily well this season, winning 20 of the 21 games they have played so far. Their next stop is Martinsville High School for sectionals.
But these things don’t just happen overnight. Junior Violet Hall, one of the team captains, expressed that if you want to have a good season, you need to be a good leader. “You always have to make sure you’re bringing yourself up, bringing your teammates up,” and as a leader you have to “just push yourself in practice and outside of practice and [in] everything that you do,” in order to succeed.
Going into a game not bringing your best, mentally and physically, makes all of the difference. Assistant Coach Torin Whitehead said, “The difference between a good team and a really great team is a team that is invested; and that cares; and that wants to be there; and has some pride in what they’re doing.”
Hall reaffirmed this notion, saying that she notices that when she doesn’t keep a levelhead, her performance suffers. She said, “if I do end up getting frustrated then I end up just making bad decisions and that affects the entire game and the rest of my teammates.”
There’s no ‘I’ in team, and chemistry with teammates is one of the most important factors to playing a good game. Not only on the court, but off the court. Over the past summer, the girls were playing in a tournament in Cedar Point, Ohio, and the coaches took it as an opportunity for team building.
Joining such a tight knit team might appear to be daunting as a freshman, but Hall expressed that she as well as the rest of the upperclassmen make sure everyone is included. “We’ve had team dinners…our sectional draw party, and we all have weights class together,” as she expressed the importance of being close as a team.
The team will have their first sectional game on Friday, February 7th at Martinsville.
