Closets of the Community is a new club at South, founded earlier this year. Closets is a club based around providing clothes and other items for the homeless population around Bloomington.
Operating through donations and the generosity from those in town, Closets has been quite successful with its first two drives. Its third drive should be taking place before the start of spring break.
The club’s GroupMe is up to 70 members and growing – with many having spread the word to their friends or found the group by donating in the drives.
Although it’s a Bloomington South Club, they have been receiving donations from other places too.
Specifically, they’ve hung several flyers at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital, and as a result, they’ve received several donations from them.
Co-founder of the club Orlee Spier described the origin of the club. She said that she and the club members “have seen a very large influx of the homeless population around Bloomington recently… [and] decided to do something to help them.”
She mentioned that they “advertise [their] drives at school and throughout the community,” and that they also advertise “through social media, announcements, [and] flyers in IU Hospital.”
According to Spier, the club has been very successful, primarily through their advertising at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
