The Oscars ceremony was last Sunday and some people, including myself, are unhappy with the results.
There were about three or four awards that I believe were awarded to the most deserving. However, a few of the most popular categories were quite iffy and I was very disappointed with them.
Starting with a few of the exciting acting awards, Kieran Culkin, who is Macaulay Culkin’s brother and starred in “Home Alone” alongside him, was incredibly deserving of Best Supporting Actor and it was thrilling to see him so moved and appreciative of his recognition. His portrayal of Benji in “A Real Pain” was emotional and simply exquisite. He succeeded in making the audience uneasy throughout the whole film. It made it clear how it feels to know someone like Benji and how it would be to potentially have someone like him in your family.
Although I never got around to watching “Anora”, I do feel very opinionated about the nominees for Best Actress. Having never seen Mikey Madison in a movie, I cannot exactly judge if she deserved it or not. However, Demi Moore was the most qualified for the award. She was incredible in her performance in “The Substance.” She goes from being gentle, to becoming a monstrous creature and portrays her complete horror and fury so well. She worked so hard on this role and it made me incredibly sad to see her passed by.
Someone who surprised us all was the very impressive Sean Baker. He succeeded in winning three Oscars, all of which he received by himself. It was incredible to see how his hard work on “Anora” paid off and got him Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. His work on the movie included his leading of all three areas of filmmaking, which was very interesting.
As popular as “Wicked” was, some were surprised with the few awards that the film received. However, I think it was quite accurate. The movie received Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, both of which were completely understandable as to why they won. The movie was also up for eight other Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Galinda, and Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba. I thought that Ariana Grande’s performance was impressive, but not remarkable enough to win an award for. I do think that Cynthia Erivo would have been deserving of Best Actress, however, I think Moore was more deserving.
Last, but absolutely not least, “Conclave” received the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. “Conclave” was an extremely interesting, well-done portrayal of the Catholic Church and the process of choosing a new pope. This type of film is sometimes thought to be boring or uninteresting. However, “Conclave” succeeded in making the story mysterious and gripping and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This made the movie incredibly entertaining to watch.
Although there are countless other Oscar awards and nominations that could be discussed, these were some of the most exciting awards. Although there was some extreme dissatisfaction in the winners this year, there were also some very well received awards as well. The Oscars are a thrilling event for anyone interested in film or that enjoys watching movies. Next year’s Oscars are bound to be exciting!
