Last week the San Francisco 49er’s quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, sat down during the national anthem as a political statement. This week in San Diego, all of the men and women in the military will be honored during the anthem, but Kaepernick plans to remain seated. According to NFL.com, after the game last week Kaepernick said “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”
We went to South athletes and asked them what they thought about Kaepernick’s actions and what they do during the national anthem. Senior Wynne Milhouse said “I think it was disrespectful and I understand what he is standing for but I don’t think that is the right way to do it.” During the national anthem, the girls soccer team “locks one hand in front of the other and face the flag” said Milhouse. According to sophomore Matt Landgraf, the boys soccer team stands with their right hands over their hearts or both hands behind their backs.
