On Tuesday Sept. 6 the Yes for MCCSC Committee is hosting a Campaign Kickoff Rally. The rally will take place on the Monroe County Courthouse lawn at 6 p.m. and is in support of a referendum question being placed on the ballot by MCCSC.
Yes for MCCSC is seeking supporters of a new referendum who can see the problems that will be created without it.
“Inequities from when the tax levy was frozen in the early 1970s have relegated MCCSC to the bottom 30 percent of Indiana schools in per pupil funding. Then an additional reduction in state funding in 2009 forced our schools to make drastic cuts,” Jim Muehling, co-chair of the Yes for MCCSC Committee said in the Committee’s media release.
In 2010 a referendum was passed that gave funds to schools to implement programs, such as the foreign language department, that had been cut in previous years. Through the referendum, more educational opportunities were offered to students. The money from the 2010 referendum expires this year.
“We know what happened without this funding: teachers were riffed, programs were suspended, and our students suffered the consequences,” Lynn Coyne, another co-chair of the Yes for MCCSC Committee said.
The purpose of the rally is to inform voters of why and how they can support the passing of a new referendum. Speakers such as students, teachers, parents and community leaders will be informing people of the details of the referendum at the rally.
Students are encouraged to attend the rally to learn more about what they can do for their school system, and the passing of this referendum. If you are unable to attend, Yes for MCCSC will be releasing more information about how to get involved one their website on Sept. 7.
