On the evening of April 5, the South orchestra will be leaving for its annual trip with the North orchestra. The two groups, which together form the Hoosier Youth Philharmonic or HYP, will be competing in the Music USA Festival in Orlando.
The orchestra members will be performing at Universal Studios Florida, and they will also have access to the theme park and Universal’s Island of Adventure in their free time. The trip will last until April 9.
Junior JeeYoon Park reported that she is “excited but at the same time kind of worried and anxious because it’s Mr. Hansen’s first time,” referring to new director Jon Hansen, who has never led an HYP trip before. Park also added that she will be playing a viola solo in Brian Balmages “Urban Concerto Grosso.”
This is certainly not the orchestra’s first trip; in the past it has traveled to locations such as Washington D.C, New York City, and Red Lion, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the musicians will have to travel to Orlando on an “18 hour bus ride,” which Park said she is dreading.
