Have you ever been perambulating euphorically through the halls of Bloomington South on a Friday during passing period, when all of a sudden your merriment comes to an abrupt end upon hearing the Plain White Tees? Well, you’re not alone.
The majority of South students appreciate the idea of music in the halls on Friday, but some do not particularly enjoy the current selections.
“We take all the top 50 pop songs of the year as well as the most popular songs of 2012. Then we discard them all and play literally anything else,” junior Logan Sweeney suggested of the method used to choose songs.
Jonathan Dusleag, junior, agreed, saying, “ The Friday music needs more variety, some trap music would be nice. I would love to hear Lil Pump.”
Sophomore Nathan Zeichner said that he enjoys the music. “ It’s very uplifting, and it’s a great way to realize that the weekend is coming.”
The people have spoken, and they have a few questions: who chooses the tunes we listen to? What are the selection criteria?
Kelley DeMier, front office secretary, is in charge of the Friday music selection.
“All in all, I have the final say when it comes to choosing, but often times if I don’t know what to play or I don’t have a theme, I will ask the office TA’s, Corbin (South Security guard), or Mr. [Jay] True for help,” DeMier said.
The final decision ultimately comes down to DeMier. She spends time throughout the week going through songs and checking them for explicit lyrics. However, the process changes when there is a theme for the week.
“I try to make the music about current events, some themes that come up during the year are the music for the Fall Sounds of South musical, Mrs. Rademacher’s Theatre South shows, home football games, and diversity day.” said DeMier.
If there is a set theme for Friday’s music, DeMier takes time to screen songs that will tie into the week’s theme. Students can feel free to suggest songs too.
“Sometimes, kids give me suggestions. If you want to give me one, make sure that the music is clean,” DeMier said.
