Several Optimist staff writers have decided to come together and pick their favorite songs each week based on recent releases, personal feelings, and general overall enjoyment.
Sept. 23rd:
Calvin Prenkert- My song of the week is “Be about you” by Winston Surfshirt. It’s R&B song with a flair of indie rock synth. The segway between the verses and choruses is very striking and stands out as one of the song’s best aspects. The lead singer’s voice is great and the song will easily whirl around your head for days.
Will Gibbons- “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol is my song of the week. Overall it’s a really good song and it makes me happy. Its both very nostalgic and very emotional. The piano part of the song is catchy and pleasing, and the singer’s voice is nice too.
Ethan Baer- My song of the week is “You Know How We Do It” by Ice Cube. This is easily one of my favorite 90’s rap songs. The beat is soothing and feels very west coast and laid back. Whenever I hear the song, I just imagine being in California in the 1990’s. The lyrics talk about how Cube and his friends act and “do it” on the west coast. This song was made in the height of the East Coast vs West Coast rap beef, and is obviously influenced by west coast style.
Seth Thomas- My favorite song of this week accurately wraps up a great month. “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire is classic, and lead singer Maurice White’s falsetto notes are to die for. Phonetically, this song bops its way to the top of my all time favorites list. If you’re looking for an oldie with a lot of charm, be sure to give this a listen.
