Vera Frye has been at South for 11 years teaching biology and life science but has recently started teaching German I and III. Now she teaches German in the morning and biology and life science in the afternoon. Frye replaced Steve Sobiech who taught German at South for 18 years. Sobiech quit over the summer to pursue other interests.
Since Sobiech left, the German club doesn’t have a sponsor. Now that Frye is teaching German, she is undecided about whether or not she will be sponsoring the German club.
Although she is new to teaching German here at South, Frye isn’t a rookie when it comes to teaching foreign language. “I taught German for 10 years in Russia and have been speaking it since I was nine,” Frye said.
Frye majored in German in college and took it all throughout high school and for five years in college. She is also on her 11th year of teaching at South.
Teaching German is the job that Frye originally wanted, but when she first started teaching at South there weren’t any open positions for German teachers. Even with the difficulties of teaching, she is glad to be doing it. “It is my dream job,” Frye said “the only hard thing is knowing where the kids are at and how much they know.”
